Kayak Fishing

Hi Duane,

Three of us hit the water very early today. We met up at 5:45 just off I95 at the Old Dixie Highway exit south of Flagler Beach Florida. The area we were fishing is called Highbridge and about as ideal a kayak fishing area as it gets. When we launched the first thing we encountered was a manatee. Trust me as docile and gentle as these creatures are just by coming up under you they will dump you and your kayak without even knowing it. Roughly 1200lbs of sea creature has the right of way in every case.

Traveling light today I only brought two Emmrods. The shorter Rugged Flex handle with a two tip rod and the short Kayak King with a four coil spinning rod. I used the Rugged Flex for topwaters but the fish were just not into that this morning. So it became a job for the little spinning rod and a small lipped hard jerkbait. The shorter grip allows fantastic control a perfect match for the lure. I waded most of the morning since it was far more comfortable with the 96 degree heat and sun. The fishing was not as fast and crazy as last week but enough to keep us interested. The Emmrod rig I used was about as good as it gets for those little lipped crankbaits. Casting distance was easily on par with the other fellows rods. As I mentioned on the phone you had it right when you mentioned the shock absorption of that spring. The fish fought well but all the strain the wrist might have in a conventional rod is taken up. Fighting fish with a short handled standard rod would require you to tuck it into your body to brace it. Not so with the Emmrod.

I've attached a shot of a snook at 22 inches caught this morning. We are one week out on Canada right now. These Florida fish are providing a nice warmup for the freshwater beasts to come.
